Course Description:

Test Prep/Study Skills is a vital component for students who will find the desired success in their Upward Bound experience. The two components of this course are:

1. preparation for the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude          Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test                     (PSAT/NMQT) and the Scholastic Aptitude Test I (SAT I)

2. study skills/organization.

Course Objectives:

This course is designed to facilitate and enhance the academic success of each student and, in accordance with the goal of the Upward Bound program, help each student realize their academic potential. Upon completion of the test prep component of this course the students will:

1. Understand the testing process and how to prepare            physically and mentally for a test.

a. Nature of the test

b. Physical preparation

c. Psychological preparation

2. Learn general strategies for test taking.

a. Time management

b. Following directions

c. Guessing

d. Changing answers

e. Handling test anxiety

3. Understand and respond efficiently to the various           types of PSAT/NMSQT questions.

a. Analogies

b. Sentence Completions

c. Critical Reading

d. Regular Math

e. Quantitative Comparisons

f. Student-Produced                  Responses

4. Understand their PSAT/NMSQT test scores.

Upon completion of the study skills component of this course the students will show improvement in the following areas:

1. goal setting

2. time management

3. note taking

4. reading and studing textbooks

5. preparation for tests and exams

6. organization for writing papers/reports

Course Requirements:

As in all Upward Bound activities, ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. Students must also possess the desire to achieve their full academic potential, be willing to change bad study habits, and have a positive attitude.
